THE TIMBER COMMISSION.

(Per Pkess Association.) Wellington, March 9. The Government has appointed the following to investigate matters concerning the timber industry: Hon. T. Y. Duncan, M.P. (Chairman)." Messrs J. F. Arnold, M.P., W. H. P. Barber (Wellington), S. J. Clarke (Auckland), H. G. Ell, M.P., W. H. Field, M.P., J. A. Hanan, M.P., W. T. Jennings, M.P., W. B. Leyland (Auckland), F. Marnier, M.l'., W. Morris (CS-rcy-moutii), and J. StaN worthy, M.P. The commission is to inquire into the following matters with respect to New Zealand timber : 1. Cost of felling2. .Cost of cutting at mill. 3. Price when sold by mill to (a) consumer, (b) middleman, (c) retailer. 4. Price when sold by middleman to (d) consumer, (e) retailer. 5. Areas of Crown land held for milling- under Land' Act or State Forests Act, showing licensee's names'and! acreage held. 6. Estimated area of Crown land still available for sawmilliug, but not .taken with detail regarding district and area. With respect to Oregon timber—7. Extent of importations and effect on local market and industries. 8. Its landed cost freight and charges separate from cost price), and its rrrice when sold to (a) consumer, (b) middleman, (c) retailer, and generally any matters which in the Commission's opinion injuriously affect timber and the timber building industries, or would promote their development,- including: the necessity or expediency of legislation on the subject. The Commission is to sit at Ihvercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch, Grey-, mouth, Wellington, Taihape, and Auckland, and tor report by May 31st.
