LOCAL MAl',KK'l'S. Oamaru Mail (lliice. Monday Afternoon. The London cables continue to report firmness in wheat, the market having been to some extent affected by reports of less favorable conditions in 'the Argentine, -with which it would appear rests the destinies of wheat duriiitr the forthcoming season. Locally, we have used up our stocks, and the merchant or miller who desire's to make a purchase is forced to go far afield to fulfil his purpose. Those who hold the wheat hold the whip hand, and are asking in some cases as much as 4s 6d f.o.b. for Tuscan. In Timaru, 4s 4d to 4s ex store was the prevailing 7>rice last week, but there is little to be had at that figure now. The local sales, restricted by the amount of grain available, have been very few during the week, 4i 4d. less commission._at siding, for an average line of velvet, os 10d at- a siding, and 4s 5d f.0.b., s.i.. for fowl wheat, being a fair criterion of values. Oats are in small demand, and the market is perhaps a little weaker even than last iveek. though the price has not deflineil.ls 8d f.0.b., less commission, having been siveu during the past few days. Potatoes maintain their firmness, and the inquiry is still brisk considering the period of the year, so that if the tubers were available" quite a good trade might be done with the North. The business transacted during the week was at the rate of £5 5s to ~£s 10s for Derwenis and Up-to-Dates. f.o.b. We quote : Wheat.—Milling. 4s 3d to 4s o£d, on trucks, nett. Oats.—ls 6d to Is Bd. according to quality. Potatoes.—£4 10s to £4 15s, on trucks, nett cash.
