(From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual entertainment in aid of the prize fund was held in the Athenaeum Hall on Thursday evening, and was well attended. -Mr J. Falconer, chairman of •committee, presided, and brieliy introduced the performers. The first- part of the programme was rendered by the school children with nuuih taste, and the audience was enthusiastic in its applause of their efforts. The items were :—Piano solo, "Little Trots," Miss Jessie Tait; chorus, "The Crafty Fox," senior pupils; recitation, ''Robert's Piece," Jessie Hill; chorus, "A Pretty Song" (action), junior girls; chorus, "John Peel," senior pupils; physical exercises and rifle drill, cadet squad, under Sergeant X. Quigley; piano solo, "livening Bells," Elsie Fleming; chorus, "The Drum" (action), junior pupils; solo, ''Dixie," Angus M'Millan; chorus, "Little Flowers," girls; chorus and march, "The Japanese Umbrella," senior girls; recitation, ''The Passing of the Year," senior girls. Several of the items were made more effective by the children carrying suitable emblematic flowers, flags, umbrellas, etc., and being very nicely dressed. The accompaniments were very ably played by Miss Elsie Fleming. The second part of the programme was rendered by Miss, Watt- and Messrs Duncan, Marshall, and Johnston. Miss Watt's rendition of "Waiata Poi" was a splendid effort and merited the hearty applause which was bestowed. Mr Duncan in his Harry Lauder songs was highly amusing, while Mr Marshall gave a vigorous rendering of the "Hielandman's Toast." Miss Marshall played sympathetic accompaniments. At- the conclusion of the concert Mr Drakley proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the teachers, the children, the performers, and to the audience for their support. After the chairman had also thanked the audience, the hall was cleared for the dance. Mr W. Wilson acted as M.C., and excellent music was supplied by Messrs Duncan, (piano) and M'Bride (violin). The catering was very efficiently attended to by Mesdames Falconer, James, and Koppert, who spared no trouble to make their part of the entertainment a success.
