Local Bodies' Conference.

The annual conference of local bodies in the .Manukau County was held to-day. Mr. E. Allen (Pukekoh'e Kast) presided. It was decided to place on record the valuable services rendered to local bodies by the iate Mr M. M. Kirkbride. M.ILK. A resolution was carried "That tlie Xo.\ious Weeds Act should be progressively administered, and owners of property should be compelled to clear a. certain portion of their property every year." It was also decided that pressure be brought to bear on the Government to clear all Crown lands of noxious weeds. It was decided that -all local bodies in the countv take united action to poison birds in July of each year, and the Government be asked to distribute poisoned grain to boards at cost price. It. was resolved that condemned stock be valued at full market rates instead of at boiling down rates. In this connection it was pointed out tkat if a beast which was ailing was bought by the farmer he hesitated about telling the inspector on account of the small value placed upon it, whereas if the fair market value- were allowed he would have no object in, keeping the disease quiet. It was resolved that quail be included in the Small Birdis Xuisanoe Act. It was also resolved. "That the Government subsidy to local bodies., be on a graduated scale, so that the amount be increased according as the rate levied is increased, and a maximum limit be done .away with. •
