Hockey Match.

NORTH OTAGO v. WAITAKI.

The match between the North Otago and Waitaki Clubs was played yesterdav afternoon ■ before a fair number of spectators, at the old Show Grounds. Although drizzling rain was falling, the ground was in fair condition. From the b'uily-off the North Otago forwards began to attack, and put the Waitaki backs on the defence; but hard hitting by the backs relieved. Shortly afterwards the North Otago forwards again got possession of the ball and took it to the circle, where Miss 0. Moss shot the first goal for North Otago From the bully-off the North Otago forwards again attacked, but through spoiling one another's play they lost an almost certain score. Immediately afterwards the Waitaki backs were again in difficulties, but Miss Herron relieved by hitting out to line. From the throw-in the Waitaki forwards got possession of the ball and carried play to the North Otago twenty-five. Good hitting, however, by the backs sent play back to Waitaki twenty-five, when the whistle sounded half-time, with the score :_ North Otago 1, Waitaki nil. The" second spell was wholly in favor of North Otago. Their backs hit well, and at times their forwards showed some good passing The Waitaki backs were very much off and the forwards, bar one, showed very little dash. From the bully-oft the North Otago forwards, by passing, quickly carried play to the Waitaki circle, .where Miss O. Moss, by a clean, hard shot, registered the second goal for North Otago. After this second score the, Waitaki forwards livened up, and from, the half-way carried play to North Otago twenty-five, but by too hard Kitting they lost any chance of scoring. Shortly after- J wards the Waitaki backs were on the de-; fence, but Miss Herron relieved by hitting i out to line. The North Otago forwards were not to be denied, and from the throw-in the wing got possession of the bail, carried it down the line/ and then centred to the circle, where Miss O. Moss 6hot her tlurd goal for North Otago.— North Otago 3, Waitaki nil. From this out the Otago forwards kept play in the Waitaki twenty-five, although on several occasions the Waitaki forwards got away ' with the ball; but through not following it up. they had no chance of scoring. Three more scores were registered by North Otago, Miss M. Reid getting two - and Miss Mitchell one, thus ending the game with North Otago 6, Waitaki nil. The exhibition of the game in the first spell was very poor, but in the second spell the North Otago Club gave a fair exhibition, the backs hitting well and the forwards passing well. The Waitaki backs did. not seem to know their positions and gave a lot of sticks, but their hitting was hard, which is a good point. The I forwards at times played fairly well, and I had they passed 'more, kept their positions, and followed smartly after the ball, they undoubtedly would have scored. All the North Otago backs played well, but special mention must be made of Miss O. Moss (half), who by quick and hard shooting registered three goals for her side. Of the forwards, Misses M. Reid, Mitchell, Ralston, and T. Kay were the best. For' the Waitakis Miss Herron (goalkeeper), by her sure and hard hitting,' repeatedly got her side out of difficulties. Miss O. Baker (wing) was' undoubtedly the pick of the team. This young player showed a lot of dash and repeatedly got away with the ball, but was never backed up by the other forwards. Misses A. Roxburgh and M. Baker also played well. Messrs L. Floyd and Phillips had charge of the game: It is hoped that thei Waitaki Crab will not be discouraged by losing their first game, but- will practise vigorously, and in a short time seek revenge.
