M.C.C. v. CANTERBURY. By Telegraph. Ckristciiuti.ii, February 2. The return match between Canterbury and the Maryiebone Ciub's English team was commenced at Lancaster Park this afternoon, when the weather was' beautiluiiy fine, and there was a good attendance. A capital wicket had been provided, and as no rain has failen of late, the outfield was exceptionally fast, all the conditions l>eing favorable to the batsmen. The Englishmen won the toss, and- elected to bat. Tne scoring was slow at the start, and the first half-dozen overs only produced five singles. Burns scored 10 in two hits and was then bowled by Bennett. The best stand was made by Branston, who, after compiling 119, was caught in the slips by Lusk, oil Patrick, if e batted for two hours, and gave no chance, and his score included one five, seventeen fours, and a few threes. The innings closed at 5.i5 p.m. tor 505. The Canterbury fielding was very good, but the bowling did not appear to trouble the batsmen much. Canterbury commenced their first innings shortly before 6 o'clock, and when time was called the score was 11 for no wickets. The game will be continued at 11.30 a.m. on Holiday.
