The Labor Conference adopted as the planks of its lighting platforms the maintenance of a white Australia; nationalisation of monopolies; old-age pensions; tariff referendum; progressive tax on im-, improved land values; restriction of public borrowing; navigation laws; citizens' defence force; Arbitration Act amendment; also resolutions in favor of nationalisation instead of paying a bonus to the iron industry. A protest was entered against the importation of opium except for medical purposes. Perth, July 10. The State Labor Conference adopted resolutions in favor of the abolition of the Upper House and State Governors, and also supported a tax on unimproved land values. The Orange demonstration at the Town Hall adopted a resolution deprecating the effort now being made to induce the Federal Parliament to adopt a recommendation in favor of Home Rule for Ireland. Received July 13, at 9.40 p.m. Sydney, July 15. When the Assembly met this afternoon the strangers' gallery was packed with unemployed. As soon as the proceedings opened a galleryite rose and asked what steps were to be taken to help the unemployed. In the middle of his speech, and while attacking Mr Carruthcrs in airing his grievances, a policeman interfered, and removed the speaker. The gallery was then cleared amid a babel of cries about starving wives and children, and demands for work. The parting shot was : "We want work, not palaver from members."

The Labor Conference had a long debate on the motion that Federal candidates should sign a pledge not to join any alliance unless it obtained the sanction of the combined labor organisations. Eventually it was resolved that the Federal Labor Party enter into no alliance extending beyond* the life of the Parliament, during which it had contracted. The conference adopted a resolution repudiating with indignation the charges that the Labor movement was endeavoring to weaken tho sanctity of the marriage tie and undermine the foundations of religious belief.
