Presentation at Totara

A pleasant little function took place at TotaTa Homestead on Monday evening last, when Mr David Allan was presented with a few tokens of esteem by the employees on the estate. Mr Allan has been bookkeeper on the estate for the past fifteen months, and is now leaving to enter the Dunedin office of the well-known firm of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Go. The presentation, which took the form of a silver-mounted and suitably-inscribed walk-ing-stick, tobacco pouch, and pipe, was made by the manager (Mr Macpherson), who. in a few happy and appropriate words, congratulated him on his appointment, and said that he was sure Mr Allan would give as much satisfaction to his new employers as he had given to those he was leaving. He remarked that it was very gratifying that such a large number of young men trained on Totara now held important billets with the most prominent stock and station agents in different parts of New Zealand, and he had no doubt (Mr Allan would uphold the good name this station had obtained for turning out thoroughly competent and practical men for these firms. He was glad Mr Allan's sterling qualities had received recognition from the employees on the estate, and he had much pleasure in making the presentation on their behalf. 'Mr Allan, in replying, said that it gave him very great pleasure to think that the Totara boys had such a good opinion of him, and thanked them for showing it in their characteristically kind, liberal and practical way. He said he would always look back with pleasure to the days he had spent on Totara, and referred to the good fellowship existing amongst all hands on the estate. Mr MaepheTson then proposed the health of the guest of the evening, which was drunk with musical honors, and followed by three hearty cheers for Mr Allan. Among other toasts proposed during the evening were "The Prosperity of New Zealand," "The ■Manager of the Estate," and "The _N.Z. and A. Land Company," and these, interspersed with musical items, having been dulv honored, an enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
