WELLINGTON.

September 25. The Wairimoo, from Sydney, arrived at one o'clock this morning. A few hours after leaving (Sydney a heavy south-west gale sprang 1 op, and the vessel had to heaveto for 32 hours. Thereafter the weather was fine. There, were 25 horses on board, including ilr Stead's cracks Cruciform and Orloff. One draught horse died, but the others are all well. Passengers for Dunedin: Misses Allen, Douglas, Mesdames 'Martin, Ruttle, Cardno, Tulloch (child and infant), Messrs Bullock, Trask, Ruttle, Cardno, Tulloch, Dr Martin, and nine steerage. Amongst the passengers by the Warrimoo from Sydney to-day were Sir James Hector, who abandoned his trip to the JRocky Mountains owing to the dea— of his son, Mr C. H. Reynolds, general manager of the Pacific Cable Company, who lias come to Wellington to interview Sir Joseph Ward, and <Mr G. G. Stead, of Ctiristchurch, who has returned with bis racehorses Cruciform, Orloff, Barlev Bree. and Curfew Bell.. Wallace, of the Sew Zealand footDall team, also returned, having recovered from his injury. DID* ED IN. September 25. A six-roomed house owned and occupied by J. iM. Anderson, KirkLind Hill, Roslvn was totally destroyed by fire last night. The' children escaped in their night dresses. . The insurances are JS2GO on the house and £IOO on the furniture.

CHRISTCHURCH. September 25. Judge Denniston gave judgment this morning in the Ashburton Club case, where the charter of the Club was revoked by the Colonial Secretary without -notice. His Honor stated that "he was satisfied that the power entrusted by the statute to the Colonial Secretary was judicial in nature, and must be executed judicially. A club whose franchise was threatened must have notice of the grounds on which it waa attacked and aiT opportunity of showing cause against t"he proposed revocation. A rule for certiorari -was granted with £lO 10s costs.

John Crook, a lad 16 years of age, was sentenced at the Supreme Court to three months' imprisonment for thefts from a shop at Opawa. Karl Jansen, a Chinese half-caste, received six months for assaulting a man with a beer bottle. At the Police Court to-day Annie DifFen, charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on a son aged 17 years, was committed for trial this morning. The boy" was seriously injured in August last by a knife which she was waving in the air while asking him to hurry up and go a message. The boy gave a back answer, and it is alleged that the knife slipped out of her hand and inflicted a wound in his side so serious that his depositions had to be taken, but the boy has since recovered.

AUCKLAND. September 25. Harry Schmirt, employed on the cooperative road works, was drowned in the Marakopa River, near Kawhia. PAIALERSTON NORTH. September 25. At a meetine of the local branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants last night, the new regulations under the classification Act were discussed. Strong exception was taken to the clause in reference to passes to members of the first and second divisions, the opinion being held that it. would create class distinction. Other clauses were adversely criticised, and the Government are to be asked to amend them in the direction desired.
