WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL

At yesterday's meeting of the above. Council, the. Engineer's report was read as follows:

"1. I have inspected tho road leading from Kd-jii Street extension to Ardgowan, past the Phoenix Mill dam. The portion of it east of the Oauia.ru Creek is not hi good order, but nothing more thivn surfacing is required. The portion between this Oamaru Creek and the bottom of the hill west of it is very dirty in wot weather. Nothing can be done, to improve it without gravel or metal. "2. The damage to tho Bobbin Creek road referred to in Messrs T. and A. Patterson's letter to the Council i;; caused by the. flood water from the Bobbin Creek, which flows along and scours out the formation. A shallow channel should be cut along the fenco on Messrs Patterson's and Miller's land, and the material excavated used to form.' a low bank between it and the road. If this were, done there would be

no difficulty in maintjiining the road in good order. About chains of this chain''' would be on Messrs Patterson's land, and about four chains on Mr Miller's

"3. The heavy sea at the beginning of this month caused serious encroachments on the Kakanui Beach road, and it was necessary to turn the traffic upon tho new road formed some time ago at the junction of the White Bocks road. lam afraid it, will soon be necessary to shift a portion of the road north of the Awa.moa bridge, as tho sea is cutting in very fast. "4. Attached is a letter from Mr Monro as to tho supply of drain pipes for house, connections lit ICurow. Ther- would be a, saving in cost by ordering all the pipiH at once. Before accepting tviider for drain at Kurow the Council should maKv arrangements for having it properly Hushed. Unless this is done there ir, <vrtain to he trouble and expense from stoppages. "5. Tenders should be invited for about. 400 cubic yards of gravl for Main North road to make up the sides of the formation where they have been worn low, and there) is no material available for raising them." The report, was adopted. At Mr Shaw's lvqmst the Engineer was authorised to have a piece of road formed near Balruddery.

Tenders were accepted as follows: Gravelline on Bobbin Creek road—-S. .1. Davis, £125 15s 6d ; formation of Stonewall road. Awamoii Estate, and. snpplv of sn.iuk) on White- Rocks road—T. Mansrll. £156: layinc pipe- drain in Knrow township—lift in kinds of the Chairman and member'for the rid in;:; .supply of drain pipes in Kurow township—Messrs .M'Cullum and Co., £46 lis 8d (accopt.d conditionally); travelling on Toka-vahi-'l'apni road—L. Daskr, £3l lfts. The Chairman paid it was n'ocrarv that. th? Council's surfacemen should be sanitary inspectors in th'-ir various districts, so that they could go upon privat-j properly i" Kurow, Ngnpura. «•}«., and see that no nuisarcos were committed. Messrs Jackson and Stringer waited upon the Council to ask that the contractor bo instructed to extend the contract of gravelling; for about, four chains in GhHnwr street, Weston, statins- that ihe stttlcm were veryanxious that this should be done Mr Livingstone, tolrl the deputation that he* was going to bring the. matter up that day.
