THE PRICE OF BREAD.

To the Editor.

Sir, —On the authority of a miller, I am informed .that the bakers pay £9 for their flour; and that they receive for every ton manufactured into bread the sum of £l9 16s Bd. Yet, sir, we find certain newspaper writers stating that the time lias not arrived when the State should fixe the price of all articles of food. lam often amused in reading the articles which appear, almost daily, commenting on the iniquity of the Millers' Association. Yet these writers can never spare time to comment on the shameful price which the bakers of Oamaru charge for their bread. Here, sir, where we grow the wheat, grind it into flour, and export it (all over the. colony), we have to pay more for bread than the residents of Auckland, Wanganui, Napier, Palmerston North-, and Wellington. Witt of your readers kindly tell me what profit; the bakers of Oamaru are at present making out of the people of Oamaru. Talk about a "combine," why the bakers of Oamaru, good church-going men every one them, are the most iniquitous "combine" on earth.—l am, etc., ' PATER.
