THE LOCAL MARKETS. Oamaru Mail CVHce, Monday Afternon. Dullness pervades the- local markets, (iml there is really very little business passing •i) any direction. Wo have heard of a few ■-■inair s.;ilt.*s of wheat during the week. In iin;' instance a line of fair, but not prime, milling wa,i sold at Is ex store, and early in the' w::ck sales of velvet wire made at Is 3d at sidinufi. There are anxious inquiries from ail "quarters for milling wheat generally, but millers, while dwirous of Securing supplies, cannot see. their way U> buy at current quotations with Hour at its present price, declaring that it would entail a loss of £1 ]H;r ton on the niaiuifacfnred articls. Negotiations are now proceeding which it is hoped will lend to an understanding being arrived at amongst millers. At a meeting of millers not included in the Association, held in Timaru last \w<:!t, a deputation was appointed to wait on the. chief of the free millers, who wan not present, with that end in view. The result of the interview will be reported to another meeting to be held to-morrow. Should the effort prove successful, We may expect to see a revival of animation in tin* wheat market, and transactions -it present quotations becoming plentiful. Fowl wheat is in good request, but there in very little available, and we have, not heard of any sales. Oats are dead, but there areno alterations in quotations to note. Judging from the present slow movement, there is a. prospect of the, end of the season finding us with a heavy surplus of oats on hand. Tim matter is one for serious consideration by holders, who should early determine whether to reduce their present price limits and so effect a clearance or carry over large stocks to next year. There is really nothing to report in "reference to barley. Potatoes areslow of sale, but there, is no change in prices.
