AUSTRALIAN CABLES.
[By Electric Telegraph.—CorrmGHT.] Per Press A bbociation. Received September 21, at 11.57 a.m. Sydney, September 21. Heavy southerly gales were experienced along the coast on Saturday and Sunday, but are now abating. Hobart, September 21.
The walking craze had a tragic terminar tion on Saturday. Forty competitors started a walk to the pinnacle of the topmost point of Mount Wellington and back. The weather was inclement and when the party were midway up the mountain a heavy snowstorm commenced, and their condition became serious ; some of iliem were rigid with cold, and others fainted. Only two reached the pinnacle. The'men came straggling back at intervals, some being temporarily demented. Two were missing and search parties found Richards dead on the track, and the body of Radford -was found some distance off with his foot caught on the cleft of a sapling. The winner (Cockshutt) suffered severely. - Launccston, September 21.
There is great rejoicing at tile port being declared free of infectious disease. Tho official returns show that there were 72 cases of smallpox, with nineteen deaths. Adelaide, September "21. Burglars who were surprised in attempting to enter a store shot Constable Donovan in the forehead and escaped'. Hopes are entertained of the constable s recovery.
