NGAPARA NOTES

Indications of the welcome springtime are becoming everywhere plentiful and although it will not be. an early one the splendid rain we are hiving will make it a very loxariattt one. The next six weeks wi i be a very busy time as there is still much ploughing to be done, in fact, the present, to know where to get teams to do the work in time. Lambs are becoming very plentiful, and should the weather clear up warn the percentage- ought to be a high oik. it is astonishing thai so many 01 the cany managed to live lltioagh the severe weather of a few weeks back. So far as can be estimated at present the ■milk supply to the factory will be ajout equal to' iMt summer's, ihe return from the industry has not h&ea large enough to cause much increase in the herds- in fact, the gocd price £or pork is the saving clause of the whole business. _ It is reported on good authority that an enterprising Canterbury family, who a short time back settled among us, nave further enlarged their holding by purchasing another thousand acre farm at a price at presentwithheld. Particulars later on. Our local flour mill is still booming away full time, and they have no difficulty iu getting rid of all their output. In amusements a syndicate of the burntorfc persuasion gave a very successiul entertainment last Thursday evening in aid ox the piano fund, when they had a very good audience. The main part of the business was in the hands of our "culled inends, and thev made good use of their opportunity. " Messrs Bones, Johnston, ana Tambo keeping tilings moving, a special word of praise being due to "Mr lambo. In the second pert of the entertainment solos were contributed by Mrs Kelly and ■Mis.es Buraside (Island Cliff), laylor (Windsor), and Mr Roddan, and a rscnation bv Mr Foster, most of the items being encoretl. The dance followed, ana ampte refreshments wers provided. Altogether a most enjoyable time was spent bj both old and young. . .. Military matters are rtc&ivmg considerable attention just now. The range is be-ic-r fitted with new sliding targets 01 the latest pattern, and new trendies and mounds are the whole y» ul "_^ bein" in the hands of -Mr Y-rardle. It is intended to have a big shoot at the opening ceremony. . _ 'the quarter! v parade ci the loca. contingent of the Son'a Otaiw Mounted Rihes and the Ngapcira Defence Rifle Club was h-'d last Jiondav evcaiug, Sergeant-Major Cardale being the visiting officer.
