WELLINGTON
September 15. At an inquest held this afternoon regarding the death of Richard W. Penfold, cadet in the accountants branch of the General Post Office, formerly of Oamaru, whose death was the result of an injury received through being shot through the spine while marking at the butts last April, the evidence showed that the mishap was purely accidental. The weather was thick and the danger signal could not he seen from the firing point, and, the target being plumb, the firing party assumed that all was clear. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and added a rider that the danger flag should be kept flying directly in front of the target, and that no shot should be fired until after a signal find been exchanged between the butts and the firing point.
