April 17. Mr Hawkins, S.M., held that there was no power to grant a permit to keep open after 11, and a conditional license was valueless without the chairman's signature, and the payment of fees. CHRISTCHURCH. April 16. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the question of the San Francisco mail service was discussed. It was decided to urge the desirableness of making Wellington a port of call for New Zealand, and to ask other Chambers to co-operate. Mr R. Meredith, M.H.K., addressed his constituents at Ashley last night. His speech was mainly a defence of the administration of the Government. He was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. AUCKLAND April 17. There was a large assemblage on the wharf to see the Hon. John M'Kenzie and family off, including a number of members of the Legislature. (The Hon. E. Mitchelsen was present. Mrs M'Ksnzie was presented with a beautiful bouquet of white and gold chrysanthemums, bound with ribbons of white and gold. Three hearty cheers were given by the crowd us the Moans left the wharf. April 18. T. e Government steamer Tutanekai will leave for Samoa this afternoon with a despatch for Admiral Kantz. She is expected to be back here in 20 days. NELSON. April 17Mr Graham, M.H.R., addressed a crowded meeting in his electorate to-night. Replying to Mr Duthie, he wished than gentleman a speedy recovery, and said he only opposed his politics.
