Waitaki County Council.

The usual monthly meeting of the County Council was held to day, when there were present—Messrs J. Borrie, Shaw, Porter, Nicholson, Wylie, Williams, Hall, and Thomson. 1b the absence of the Chairman, Mr Borrie was voted to the chair. Mr Mahoney, White tone, waited on the Council with reference to the roadline near his place, which was blocked with gorse. He said he had made an application about surfacing this road six months ago : but so far nothing had been done, and it> was now so bad that he coold not get to his paddock, i The minutes were turned up, and it was found that at the meeting where Mr Mahoney's application was 1 made the matter was referred to Mr Williams, and at the next meeting Mr Williams had moved that the parties who caused the gorse nnisance be notified that the nnisance mnst be abated. Mr Williams said that Mr Hislop, as agent for Mr Lees, appeared to be trying to nse the Conncil as a lever to get a late tenant to clear the gone. The chairman said he had been deputed to see Mr H slop, and when he saw him Mr Hislop promised to see that the gorse was cleared. Mr Nicholson moved that the matter be pat into the hands of the Council's solicitor, j Seconded by Mr Williams and carried. ' Mr Mahoney also said that he had received a notice to clear gorse off a roadline which was not described in the notice, and that if he cleared the gorse off the roadline as described he would have to go into another man's paddock. The engineer was instructed to look the matter np and report at next meeting. Mr Flynn, Ardgowan, waited en the Council with regard to some rates which he had paid upon a section on tbe Maerewhenua, in excess of what he had a right to pay, be having tabea up land since the New Year and had paid the fall rates. The Chairman explained that tbe land was chargeable wi h tbe rates, although the tenant had been changed, and that he should have looked into the matter before he took np tbe laud. it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Hall that the Council take no action.

The tenders were accepted as follow : Contract 770—Formation Airedale road, L 72 4s 6d, J. Kooney Contract 771 —iJetal, Main South road, L 261 3a 4d, J. Rooney Contract 772—Culvert on road in block 11, Oamaru, L 47 3s 4d. Robert Carrie

Accounts were passed forpayment amounting as follows—Geneial L 959 5s 9d, Papakaio Water-race Lll 16s 4d, total i.971 2s Id. The total included L'2B 03 Id for small birds' eggs. Mr Shaw pointed out that the surfacemen were instructed some time ago lo destroy all Canadian thistles growing on the roads, but he noticed that the road leading from Reidscon to the Kakanui was almost impassable for them.

Mr John Johnston, ranger, Georgetown, wrote resigning that office, as he had been offered a better position. Mr John x> damson, Mahenn, wrote applying for the right to cut cocksfoot on ro*d from Clifton Falls to top of Tapui tnnnel and Slaty Creek. He enclosed LI for protection of the right. A simrar application was received from Mr Hush Wallace, Georgetown, f->r road— Hutchison's to Ngapara and Tussocky road leading to Windsor Park, top road leading past Mr N icoiis' to V.r Cullen's, and road leading from Mr Taylor's to Borton's siding. He offered 20a for the right. Mr Shaw moved that tenders be called for the right. Mr William 3 seconded the motion, as there were other men who won d make oSers. Mr Wylie moved that the application be granted. Mr Hall seconded the amendment. The amendment wa3 carried by 5 to 2. Icr3 Atkinson wrote stating that she would take Lo 103 for the portion ot land in section 1 of 18, block 3, Oamaru district. Mr Williams moved that the offer to sell he accepted, which wa3 seconded by Mr Hal 1 , and carried. An order was made to proceed against a number of gorse] delinquents in the Otiake district.
