Addington Markets.

(by telegraph.)

Christchurch, November 2,

Tbe market to-day at Addington was a double one, as there will be no sale at these yards next week on account of the holidays. Entries were large in all the fat classes, and the attendance was much above the average, including a number of farmers and graziers from outside Canterbury. Business was brisk, but owing to the large yardings it was late when the market was over.

Pat Cattle.—The cattle yarded were nearly all good to prime sorts, and, considering the large supply, a very good sale resulted, bidding being spirited right through, and last week's values were fully maintained—viz., from 22a to 25s per 1001b for prime ; good, 17s to 20a ; and others down to 15s. A very fine North Island bullock brought Ll3, and 16 head from the Peninsula averaged LlO a piece. Good to prime steers brought L 8 to LlO ; others down to L 6 2s 6d ; good to prime heifers, L 6 to L 7 ; and others down to L 4 17s 6d ; an extra prime cow, L 8 2s 6 ; good to prime cows, L 5 to JL7 ; and others down to L 3 17s 6d.

Fat Sheep.—A large yarding included a great many shorn lots. The quality all through was scarcely as good as is generally seen at the market before the show, although there were some very wellfinished pens. Nearly all the sheep came from Canterbury, there being very few southern lots on offer. All classes sold well, and showed a further rise, this being especially the case with shorn sheep. Nearly all were taken by butchers, prices being too high for exporters. Prime woolly wethers brought 17s to 19a ; and extra good, 21s to 28s; medium sorts, 15a 9d to 16s 6d ; inferior down to 133 6d ; hoggets, 14s to 183 ; woolly ewes, 14s to 183 ; best shorn wethers, 13s Id to 16s; others, 10s 6i to 12s 6d; best do ewes, 133 to 15s 9d ; others, 8s 9d to 12s 9d ; merino wethers, 15s lOd to 17s 3d ; and ewes, 16s sd.

Fat lambs came forward in large numbers there being about 1250 on offer. Although there were some well finished lots in, the quality all round was not extra good. Freezing buyers have started operations, and all prime lots sold well, throe lines from the Ellesmere district—those of Mr A. Chamberlain at 14s 4d, and Messrs F. Jackson and W. Wright's 13a 9d—topping the market. The better kinds brought from lis to 14s 4d, and others down to 83.

Pigs.—All classes were in over-supply, and prices for fat sorts dropped fully 33 to 4s per head, which means a decline of about Jd per lb. Stores also were not in much request. Entries for day : 8569 sheep and lambs, 535 cattle, and 487 pigs.
