Cairo, October 2. The Dervishes attempted to retake Gedareff, butt were badly repulsed. A contingent from Omdurman will reinforce Gedareff to enable Lieut.-Col. Parsons to clear the provinces of Dervishes. „ It is believed here that Captain Marchand will shortly evacuate Fashoda. Officers from there report that Captain Marchand's position was critical when relieved. He was entrenched on a tongue of land surrounded by mehacing natives. Many of his own followers had deserted, and the rest were delighted when rescued. Captain, Marchand was informed that such ineffective beenpation was untenable.
