Political Notes.
(BY TBLEGBAPH). (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ) Wellington, Jnly 30. THE COURSE OP BUSINESS. The Bank of New Zealand Bill will probably pass through Committee at' Tuesday's sitting, in which case the third reading would be taken on Friday afternoon, and the Financial Statement wonld be laid on the table on Friday evening. THE POLICE COMMISSION. The report of the Police Commission will not be laid before Parliament until the whole of the evidence is printed, and as the Auckland evidence is not yet in the hands of the Government printer, it will be two or three weeks, or roughly speaking the Financial debate will be over, before the report and evidence can be presented to the House. If rumor is to be believed, the report will exonerate the police force as a whole from the specific charges made against it, and will make recommendations for the reorganisation of the force and an amendment of the licensing law on the lines indicated in Commissioner Tunbridge's report. TTTT*. BRITISH RESIDENT AT RARATCNGA. On enquiry I learn that there is no Intention of filling up the position vacated by the resignation of Mt F. J. Moss before October next. There are three persons named as fib to fill the position viz., Mr Albert Glover, of Auckland, who haß an intimate knowledge of the Raratongan people and language, Mr C. D. Whitcombe, whose experience of the Polynesians has been gained in Tonga, and Mr Mahlin, who held an official position at Samoa. It is recognised that a man of a strong yet conciliatory nature is required for the duties of British Resident, and great deliberation will be exercised in making the choice. The appointment rests nominally with the Secretary of State for tbe Colonies, bub will be made on the recommendation of the New Zealand Government, which pays the salary.
