The Emperor of China has received Prince Henry of Prussia at the Summer Palace on' terms of equality. He_ afterwards returned Prince Henry's visit, and exchanged presents. Tho Prince then visited . the Dowager Empress* who was much Impressed with his masterful ability. Received May 18, at 9.10 a m. London, May 17. The .Queen has sent a touching letter to Mr Gladstone thanking him for his services" to her country and her throne. The Princess of Wales telegraphed : " am praying for you." In the House of Lords Earl Hopetoun saidthat o.wing to a slight bar the Government would be unable to convert Durban Into a coaling station. Paris, May 17. Bonds and gold of the value of half a million-have been stolen from a van while In transit from the terminus of the Lyons railway, Paris, to the bank in which they were to have been deposited.
