THE LABOR QUESTION.

(per united press association. ) Received September 26, at 5 p.m. , Sydney, September 25, The conference of mine owners and miners' representatives to discuss the request of the miners that evory skip of coal be weighed, and to talk over the renewal of the district agreement, proved abortive. On behalf of the owners it was stated that if the miners insisted on their demands respecting the proprietors would have to consider the advisability of closing the collieries. Whilo the owners are of this opinion the question of a general agreement is nqw past all hope. London, September 25. The employers of cotton spinners and manufacturers propose to make a reduction of 5 per cent, in wages. The operatives, believing the cotton stufl's markets are improving, are likely to rosiab the reduction. The Dock, Wharf, River Side and General Laborers' organisation has expelled the Seamen and Firemen's Union in consequence of non-payment of fees.
