He thinks that it will result in the matter being gone on with at once. He is much gratified that the Conference adopted nearly all the recommendations of the Australian colonies. The barque St. Mary's Bay, from Sharpness, experienced a terrible gale off Tasmania. Five men were washed overboard and two drowned. The chief officer's leg was broken. Melbourne, January 16. An influential deputation of the Presbyterian Assembly drew the attention of Mr Turner (the Premier) to the influence the French were gaining in the New Hebrides, and the action of Frepch traders ia carrying on a business in firearms and liquor. They urged that the matter be considered at the meetinz of the Federal Council. Mr Turner promised to bring the matter under the notice of the Council. Received Jannary 16, at 10.10 a-m. Adelaide, January 16. Yorke, charged with forging the names of certain sharebrokers to mining telegrams, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to sis months' imprisonment on each charge. The more serious charges were not proceeded with. Received January 16, at 10.10 a.m. Perth, January 16. A large barque is ashore and apparently deserted at Jurien Bay. She is supposed to be the Europa, from Glasgow to Freemantle, with general cargo. Received January 16, at 10.40 a.m. S yd net, January 16. Arrived—Stanley and Kate Tatham, from Kaipara; Tasmania, from Auckland. Newcastle, January 16. Sailed—Elizabeth Graham and St. Louis, for Lyttelton { Waitemata, for Auckland ; Asia, for Wellington. Melbourne, January 16. Arrived —Davenport, from the Thames.
