Hasoklen, Under-Secretary for the .Justice Department and Registrar of Patents, has resigned from the public service, and will be succeeded by Mr Waldorgrave, Chief Clerk in the Justice Department. Mr Haselden joined the Civil Service in Auckland in 1860, and received the appointment of Under-Sec-retary for the Justice Department in 18S6. Mr Waldegrave was for somo timo private secretary to the Hon. W. P. Reeves. Arrived, at (>.3o—Rakaia, from Auckland.

The committee of the City Council decided to recommend to allow gold mining to proceed at tho waterworks if the parties combine to drive a tunnel from below tho dam. At a meeting of the Progressive Liberal Association, it was determined to communicate by circular letter with the various political and labor bodies throughout the colony, inviting all to take part in the formation of a political platform that should be recognised throughout the colony. A resolution was also passed, "That this Association heartily congratulates Dr Emily Sideberg on obtaining her diploma, and wishes hev overy success in her future career." It was also resolved that this Association accords to tho Hon. W. P. Reeves a hearty vote of thanks for his uast services in aiding to pass Liberal and Labor measures.

At the criminal sessions of the Supremo Court, James Thompson was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for an indocent assault on a cirl of weak intellect undor 15 ; Albert Edward Alley, three years for larceny ; and William Marshall, 10 years for an offence on a girl under 10. In connection with the Rotorua buralary, two men named T Hardie and J. Steen were arrested at Okoroire oharged with being the perpetrators.
