A Gallant Woman.
The police of the Hackney Division on the 12th June presented a purse of gold, subscribed by themselves, to Miss Margaret Sinclair, of Clapton, for her heroic conduct in assisting Police-constable Bassick to arrest a man named Mitchell after the latter had stabbed the constable with a dagger. On the 15th April Miss Sinclair was passing through Mill Fields, Clapton, when she saw the constable and Mitchell struggling together. The officer grew weak from loss of blood, and was obliged to release his hold of the prisoner, who was about to make off when Miss Sinclair seized him. A fierce struggle ensued, but the lady clung to him tenaciously until another constable arrived on the scene and took him into custody. Sub-divisional Inspector Askew, in making the presentation, said that the Chief Commissioner had written, a letter in which he paid high tribute" to the gallantry of Miss Sinclair, but for whose aid a murderous assassin would have escaped justice. He was sure that every man in the force felfc proud of having such a staunch and true friend as Miss Sinclair. Miss Sinclair, who appeared much moved, having thanked the donors, the proceedings closed with three cheers for the Clapton heroine.
