Three men disguised fired at Mr M'Swiney, a justice of the peace, who was returning from the sessions at Kanturk, County Cork. None of the shots took effect. He replied with a revolver, but the men escaped. Lord Brassey, addressing the women rf the Liberal Association, said that as the ison of perhaps one of the greatest employers of modern times, the knowledge of overwork and the miserable pay of factory women was repugnant to him, as also were the 'present exposed and illguarded ' machinery and the " insanitary condition of the majority of factories. Correction—The visible supply of wheat is 69,700,000 bushels. The Victorian wheat cargoes ex Lucepara and Celtic Monarch sold at 25s and 24s 9d respectively. It is rumored in official circles that Earl Glasgow will succeed the late Sir R. W. Duff as Governor of New South Wales. The Rev. John Reginald Harmer, Dean of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, who accepted the Bishopric of Adelaide, rendered vacant by the appointment of the Right Rev. G. W. Kennion, D.D., to the See of Bath and Wells, was consecrated to-day by the Archbishop of Canterbury, at Westminster Abbey, assisted by the Bishops of Manchester, London, Bath> and Wells, and Salisbury. Canon George Body preached. Jabez Balfour has been committed to stand his trial at the June sessions on six charges. Ottawa, May 23. The Government of Manitoba have decided to recognise "separate" Roman Catholic schools, which are to be placed under inspection, and must be managed by certificated teachers. London, May 24. The P. and O. Company's new cargo steamer Borneo, of 5000 tons, has been launched. Oscar Wilde's case is adjourned. The charge against him in connection with Shelley has been withdrawn, as there was not corroborative evidence. Lord Salisbury, in his speech at Bradford, said it was imperative for the empire to assume new responsibilities when opening new markets in uncivilised countries. The vacauey caused in the representation of Warwick and Leamington in the House of Commons, owing to the retirement of Speaker Peel, has been filled by the return of Mr Lyttelton, a Unionist, by a majority of 500 votes. The son of the Ameer of Afghanistan has arrived in England, and great preparations are being made to entertain him. London, May 24. Owing to bad reports of the American crops there is a sudden boom in Australian wheat, which rose from Is to Is 6d per quarter in a few hours. Lord Roberts has been promoted to the rank of field-marshal. The Times, referring to the deputation from the associated Chambers of Commerce, which will wait to-day on the Premier, Chancellor, and PostmasterGeneral in support of a resolution carried at the Canadian Conference favoring a subsidy to the Pacific steamers and cable strongly urges Lord Rosebery to assent to the proposal of the colonies which, it says, have already taken their part in welding the Empire, and colonial taxpayers are bearing the burden. The director of the United States Ministry says the increased gold output, especially of Australian, disposes of the contention of the supporters of silver as to the insufficiency of gold. Received May 25, at 1.30 a m. London, May 24.

The Bank of England returns published to-day show "the" total reserve in notes and bullion to be L 28,430,000, the proportion of reserves to liabilities being 64"38.

Sugar—German beet, quiet, 10s 3d ; Java, firm, 12s 9d. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in Clyde, 43s 3d. At the wool sales a good selection was offered, and prices were very firm.
