A Fatal Accident.

♦ N BY TELEGRAPH.) Invercargill, April 27. At 10 o'clock yesterday morning, Alexander Sutherland, Peter Cameron, and James Cromarty, three elderly miners, were crossing from Coal Island to the lighthouse store at Puysegur Point in a small boat to get letters and papers brought by the steamer Invercargill. While passing through the narrow passage the boat struck a rock and capsized. On either side kelp was growing and the surf breaking, which rendered swimming difficult, but Philip Payne, the fourth occupant, managed to reach the shore after being in the water over an hour and making a desperate effort to f&ve Cameron. The accident happened over eighty yards from the landing place, from where a man named Burgess heard the cries, but being very short-sighted ho suf nothing of those struggling in the water. If he had, there was a boat handy and he could have rescued them.
