A verdict of not guilty was returned. The jury considered that the charges made by Queensberry were of public benefit. Wilde's counsel withdrew from the case. Wilde himself left the Court while his counsel was explaining that plaintiffs literature and letters justified the plea of the defence : that Wilde posed as an immoral person. He explained that the reason he withdrew from the case was so as to avoid the appalling evidence which would be adduced. The verdict was received with loud cheers. It is expected that Wilde will be arrested. No warrant has yet been applied for, but counsel for the Marquis of Queensberry has sent the Public Prosecutor a statement of witnesses and notes on the evidence in order to prevent a mis carriage of justice. Calcutta, April 5. The efforts of the troops from Gilgit to force the Mastuj Pass failed, owing to a blinding snowstorm. Fifteen were killed on the British side. Both brigades are at Malakuhd Pass. The Ranizai tribesmen, who were defeated at the storming of Malakund, have since submitted to the British.

New York, April 5. By an explosion in a drinking saloon in New Orleans 15 people were killed and many injured. It is believed to be the work of the " Mafia " Society, formed to avenge the Ijnching of Sicilians in prison in New Orleans in 1891. The Conservative Party in Leamington constitutency refuse to support the speaker's son George in the forthcoming election for the seat. The attitude of the party is due to anger at the rejection of Mr Montague Nelson's candidature by the Conservative leaders.

The Directors of the Londonderry mine, Coolgardie, are in receipt of a cablegram stating that the rich shoots of ore in the mine are exhausted. The news has caused a sensation in the mining market. At the Bank of Australasia meeting Mr Gibbs instanced as hopeful features of the position of the colonies the increase of production, the rise in wool and silver, the great output of gold, the improved revenue returns, public and private economy, and the absence of a commercial crisis.

The Western Australian loan is expected to be placed on the market after Easter, and its success is regarded as certain.

It is expected in financial circles in the city that Queensland and New South Wales will shortly float loans. Mr R. C. The steamer Buteshire, from Port Chalmers (February 8). has arrived, and her live sheep have been landed in splendid condition. Only three died during the voyage. The animals fe'd well, and the heavy beasts stood tbe voyage particularly well. Eighteen of the bullocks are in excellent condition and two middling.
