The cause is attributed to distress at his inability to attain moral perfection. Rome, September 13. Two armed anarchists were arrested in the "Vatican gardens, near the summer villa. On discovery they attempted to escape by scaling the outer wall, and abandoned their weapons. It is believed they intended to assassinate the Pope.
