The Post states: —"We understand that negotiation for the amalgamation of the Colonial Bank and the Bank of New Zealand are in such an advanced condition that the proposals are likely to be in the hands of the Government within 48 hours." The Aovangi, from London, via the Cape and Hobart, passed Cape Farewell at 2.50 this afternoon, and will arrive about midnight. The vessel will anchor in the bay, and will not be cleared tonight. The Masterton police arrested a man named Richard Crocker on a charge of burglary, and on searching the house found a quantity of articles, the proceeds of other burglaries, also a number of burglar's tools. Among the passengers by the Aorangi, which arrived at 1 a.m., is Miss Yates, founder of the Bread and Food Reform League. Richard Morton, alias Roberts, undergoing a sentence of three months for false pretences, was brought up to-day on further charges, and sentenced to three months, commencing at the end of the present sentence. Accused, who is from Auckland, had travelled as a Post Office inspector, and took orders for stamps. He asserted that he had supplied rubber stamps everywhere but at Outrani and Middlemarch. The directors of Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co.'s New Zealand Drug Company have declared an interim dividend at the rate of 7k per cent, per annum. AUCKLAND. September 11. A fire occurred at Onehunga this morning at 2 o'clock. Hyatt, a news agent, was aroused by a smell of fire, and he awoke the neighbors. The shop of Hyatt is next the Terminus Hotel, and John Bray being aroused awakened the occupants. A number of visitors, including a number of children, had a narrow escape. Fred Shortland went to the bedrooms and brought out one child. A number of men engaged in the iron works were also instrumental in saving life. Hyatt was insured for Ll5O in the Straits Company ; the owner of the Terminus Hotel, LISOO in the North German ; Messrs Roberts and Harris, L 350 in the Norwich ; Bray's furniture, L3OO ; and Bray's stocks, L 10 0; Broadfoot, L2OO, and Sullivan's building, LIOO in the Union. The loss is LIOOO.
