Trial of the Vaile System.

(Northern Advertiser.) The traffic results for the first fourweekly period under the new stage system are very encouraging, and promise well for the new system. The passenger traffic is already three times what it was last year, 1000 sinde tickets and 1000 return tickets having been sold. Now that the travelling public is accustomed to the common sense plan of using return tickets when they please, it is difficult to understand why the old system prevailed so long, as any restriction on the sale of tickets must surely be disadvantageous to the railway. Under the system now in vogue here, a person can at any time purchase a return ticket and use the return half at any time and on any section, or rather stage, of the railway. The parcel system has also proved a phenomenal success. This system is simplicity itself. Instead of having to consign a parcel and make out all sorts of waybills and get your goods classified, here a person merely buys a parcels stamp, sticks it to his parcel as he would a stamp to a letter, hands the parcel over to the stationmaster, and there ends all trouble. The system assimilates to the parcels post.. No loss than 600 parcel stamps were sold last month under this system. Last year the railway under the old system carried no parcels. Compared with the mileage of the Auckland line, the Whangarei line carries four times as many parcels. The Auckland line only eairied 3500 parcels, but under the Whangarei system it should have carried 14,000. This is an object lesson in railway management. The goods traffic on the Whangarei line also shows a great increase.
