Administration of the Education Reserves.
(by telegraph.) Dunedin, June 20. At a meeting of the School Commissioners some discussion took place on the remarks made by the Minister for Lands as to the Commissioners' administration. The Chairman read a letter from the Lands Department notifying that MiMarch had been appointed to proceed to Southland to make full inquiries into the whole matter. The Chairman stated that he had requested the secretary to give MiMarch every information, and this had been done, books, documents, returns, etc., having been placed at his disposal. Members spoke at length on the statements made at Hampden as to the value of the Commissioners' land at Te Anau. The general opinion was that the description 'given could only apply to the University reserve, with which Commissioners had nothing whatever to do. It was resolved unanimously that while heartily approving of the Chairman's actions, the Commissioners desire to place on record their dissent from the assumed authority of the Minister for Lands to appoint anyone to make such inquiry as that committed to Mr March, the Commissioners being appointed by special Act, with powers strictly denned and accountable to Parliament.
