COMMERCIAL.

Oamaku Mail Office, Saturday afternoon. There is no change to record in the markets this week, and the same uncertain tendency with regard to the price of wheat still prevails. Millers arc attempting to force the market down, with varying degrees of success. Whether the damage caused by the floods will tend ultimately to harden the market, as some assert, remains to be seen. Meanwhile, quotations are absolutely impossible in the absence of transactions. Oats remain unaltered. The new crop is deficient in quality and not of a good color, so far as it has come forward. Barley is nominal. Potatoes are unchanged —big shipments to Dunedin have knocked out the bottom of the market. Other things are unaltered. We quote:— Wheat —Unquotable. Oats Prime short, Is 7d to Is 8d ; Danish, Is 7d to Is Sd ; Tartars, Is Gd to Is 7d. New crop, 2d less. Barley—Prime malting, 2s 3d to 2s 6<l; feed, Is 6d to Is 9d. Chaff Prime oaten sheaf, L"2 ; straw, 30s. Bran, L 3 10s to L 3 15s. Pollard, L 3 10s to L 3 las. Potatoes (new), 30s per tou, nominal. Flour—Roller, 200 T s Ll2 : 100"s, Ll2 10s ; 50's, Ll2 15s. Stone, LI less. Dairy Produce—Butter, 6d (primequality); second quality, 4d (unsaleable). Eggs, 7d. DUNEDIN MARKETS. Messrs Lintott, Skeet and Co., Dunedin, report as follows : Wheat —Business in milling wheat is still very stagnant. Millers are disposing of surplus stocks of flour, aud waiting in anticipation of values weakening. There is a superabundance of second quality on hand for fowl feed, with a limited demand. Quotations nominal. Best milling, 4s 3d to 4s 6d ; medium to good, 3s 9d to 4s 3d ; inferior to medium, 2s to 3s 6d ; ex store, sacks in, terms. Oats —Market quiet; no speculation for shipping, although a slight demand exists for really prime samples. Quotations—For best milling, Is 7d to Is 7id ; stout brightfeed, Is ti.M to Is 7d; medium, Is 4Sd to Is 6d : ex store, sacks extra, net. Barley—No demand. Maltsters have stocks in hand of last season's sufficient for their requirements for some time. Quotations only nominal. Best malting, 2s 6d to 3s lOd ; medium to good, 2s 6d to 2s Sd ; feed and milling, Cs to 2s 4d; ex store, sacks extra, terms. Grass Seed—Well-dressed samples are inquired for, but farmers' parcels, unless clean and machine-dressed, cannot find a market alongside imported seed, of which there is a quantity in the market. Buyers do not seem anxious to deal, and quotations can only be accepted as purely nominal, say, 3s to 3s 3d for clean and oft' old pasture ; farmers' parcels, Is lOd io 2s 6d. Cocksfoot —A dead letter; no inquiry. Potatoes Since the bad weather a slightly better demand exists, and we have placed several consignments of prime ripe kidneys at 40s, but Peninsula supplies are still ahead of local requirements. Chaff is in good supply, and values are slightly weaker. We quote for best, 55s to 60s ; inferior to medium, 35s to 55s per ton. The severe weather experienced during the last few days, both north and south, may doubtless affect values in the near future, but to what extent it is difficult to surmise. CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The following is the Corn Exchange report (per N. P. Meyers, secretary) for the week ending Friday, February 12, 1592 : The unfavorable weather of the past week has, it is feared, done a considerable amount of damage to the crops, especially down south, where nearly three-fourths of the com is still in stook. The weather now, at the time of writing, is all that could be wished for, and it is hoped that it will ti inimise the damage to a considerable extent. Wheat is only offering in limited quantity, and it will now be some days before threshing operations again commence. The yields are not quite so good as was anticipated, but the quality that has come forward has been all that could be desired. Oats are offering plentifully, but the market is weak at quotations. The market has not yet opened. Growers are asking more than buyers are inclined to give ; the samples are only medium, but the latter crops are expected to be better. Grass seed is in plentiful supply with feeble market. Our quotations are as follow : Wheat—Prime milling Tuscan, 3s lOd ; Pearl, 3s 9d; Hunter's, 3s 7d ; fowl, 3s to 3s 3d. Oats—Milling, Is 9d to Is lOd ; short feed, Is od to Is S.UI; long and inferior, Is 6d to Is 7d. Barley Nominally, 3s 3d for prime malting; feed, 2s. Beans, 2s lOd to 3s. Peas—Blue, 3s to 3s 3d ; feed, 2s Gd. Grass Seed—Rye (machine-dressed), 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; farmers' parcels, 2s 3d to 3s. Dairy Produce—Butter : Prime factorymade, 7d to Sd ; fanners' keg, 7d. Cheese : loaf shape, sd; large and medium, 4d to 4Ad. The above prices are those paid tc farmers for delivery, f.0.b., at Lyttelton, sacks extra.
