There was no demonstration. His Excellency will be the suest of the Hon. Charles Johnston his stay here. The Hon. Mr Ward returned by the same steamer. DUNEDIjN February 12. The final auction of yesterday's wool siles showed a decline of |cl to Ad compared with previous sales. This is a slight improvement on the rates ruling at the I morning's sales. t AUCKLAND. February 12. The Presbyterian Assembly, after discussion on the foreign mission report, appointed a committee to consider the financial position of the fund, especially in relation to the proposed appointment of a third missionary and the incidental expenditure. ILYTTELTON. February 12. The inquiry into the fire oil the ship Everest on the morning of January 30 was opened at the R.M. Court this morning, before Mr Beetham, R.M. Sergt. j I O'M.illey conducts the inquiry, and Mr J. ' C. Martin, Crown Prosecutor, appears on behalf of the Crown. The evidence of Captain Hibbert (master), the first and second officers, the watchman on board, and some of the crew, and a member of the fire brigade, has been taken, and points to the ship having been wilfully set on lire by some of the crew. A good sum was due to the crew for wages. Whether the ship was burnt or condemned, this would be paid. A tin of kerosene, when missed on the day of the lire, was partly full. It was found after the fire where the fire broke out. The tin was cut open. The captain noticed a strong smell of kerosene when he went aboard at 11.45 p.m. He thought it was from the cabin lamp. The fire started at 12.10. NEW PLYMOUTH. February 12. | An inquest was held on the body of Southwood, which was brought in from the top of Mount Egmont last evening. The evidence given was similar to the facts already telegraphed, and a verdict was ieturned that deceased was found dead on Mount Egmont, with no marks of violence. The body will be buried in the Henui cemetery this afternoon. The money found on the body was handed over to deceased's uncle. ASHBURTON. February 12. Herbert Cecil St. John, alias Charles Lyndon, alias Herbert Cyril Maklin Judd, was to-day sentenced to six months' imprisonment fur the larceny of music from a lioarding-house, and the contents of mission boxes from the Baptist Church. The prisoner pretended to be travelling as a theatrical agent. The Rev. Mr Mayer's lecture on Dr Harnardo's Humes last night realised LSO clear of all expenses. The weather has taken up a<jain, and the crop prospect is more hopeful.
