The amount of Property Tax collected to the 6th February of this year was L23G,500, as against L 236,000 to the same clay last year. Tlio Treasurer's estimate is L 355,000, and the Department fully expect it to be exceeded. The last date of payment, to escape the penalty, is the 18th inst., and the Department will proceed against defaulters at the end of the month. It is believed that Thomas Sprugcs, aged 18, a native of Christchurch, has been drowned in the Tiraumea river, in the Eketahuna district. He loft the station on the 6th for Woodlands, and was to call at the Waterfalls, but nothing more was heard of him. His dog was found on the river bank. DUNEDIN. February 10. A valuable discovery of cinnabar in Bruce County is roported. The Rev. Mr York has resigned the curacy of St. Paul's and will proceed to England. The Governor and Postmaster-General left by a special train for Christchurch at 8 this morning. The Chairman of the Westport Coal Company, at the annual meeting, said that the liabilities had been reduced by L 16,000 during 1891, and that L18,21(> due to the Company had been paid since the books were closed at the end of the year. With the financial arrangements now made there would be no necessity for any call, and they would bo able to prosecute works for some time without further borrowing. CHRISTCHURCH. February 10. The entries for the Christchurch regatta are 36, against 43 last year. The weather continues dull, with occasional showers, and is still threatening. NEW PLYMOUTH. February 10. The weather is very wet and the mountain is covered with clouds, so it is expected that the party will not get further than the tourists' hut, and that tlicy will not make the ascent to-day to get Southwood's body. Mr C. Smith, of Wellington, arrived by last night's express, and has identified several articles found on the body. Mr Smith, when in England, obtained the number of his nephew's watch and its maker's name. The works are in perfect order, although the watch has been exposed for ten months. Among other things found on the deceased were ten LI notes, a sovereign, four halfsovereigns, half-a-crown, a farthing, and a quarter anna, a railway time-table, and a railway return ticket to Palmerston North.
