Was it a Race?

(Melbourne Argus.) If there were no regulations expressly prohibiting the masters of passenger steamships from engaging in ocean races, it might be supposed that the excitement of the approaching Melbourne Cup had extended to the Tasmanian steamship trade, and that the Coogee and the Rotomahana steamed a real match on their last voyage from Launceston. Both vessels arrived off Williamstown within five minutes of each other, there having been a difference of 20 minutes in their departure from Rosevears, the Coogee accomplishing the trip in 16hr 2min and the Rotomahana in 16hr 6min. It had been whispered about in shipping circles for the last few days that the two vessels would very likely leave Launceston at about the same time, and would in all probability make unusually rapid passages, so that considerable interest was taken in their performances. If it had been actually a race there could hardly have been srreater excitement among those 011 board the steamers, .and much disappointment was felt when the Rotomahana had to slow down for a few minutes after midnight on account of a slight mishap to the machinery. Both vessels were in excellent trim for the run, and the weather was all that could be desired for a quick run.
