September 20. Sir J. R. Cox, M.P., who is travelling the colony in the interests of evicted tenants in Ireland, addressed a meeting in the Theatre Royal last night, which was but poorly attended. At- the conclusion of the meeting it .vas resolved that subscription lists be started, and about LSO were subscribed, the Hons. Mr Buckley and Dr Grace heading the lists with 10 guineas each.

September 20. The flags of the shipping were at halfmast to-day, as a mark of respect to Mr John Smith, late second officer of the Monowai, who died on Saturday. Deceased was a native of Orkney, and was 39 years of age. The Dunedin Gold Dredging Company obtained 430z of gold last week. At a meeting of the creditors of John Cochrane, rabbiter, St. Bathans, the evidence showed that he had earned LB4O in 27 months. He kept 110 books, and could not account for the money. He owes some L3OO. It was carried that he pay 20s in the £ in instalments of 30s per week, failing which the creditors will combine to pay the costs of examination before the J utlge.

September 10. The fifth annual cross-country steeplechase of three miles, held under the auspices of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club to-day, was a great success. There was a sood attendance. The weather was cold, and the course over the country was heavy going. Twentyeight started. The result was : T. Roeback, 50 sees. 1; W. Beade l, 100 sees, 2; W. Irvine, SO sees, 3. Won easily by 30 yards. Time—lOmin ssec. September 20. Henry Brown's grocery store, Colombostreet north, was totally destroyed by tire at 2 a.m. to-day. The insurance were HOO on the building, in favor of the Permanent Building Society ; stock and effects, L3OO, in the Standard Office. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers Association on Saturday the report and balance-sheet submitted showed Ll4O to credit for thefirst year, and 140 members on the books.
