The Sydenhem Licensing Election Appeal.
(by telegraph.) Chrlstchcrch. June 9. Mr Justice Denniston gave judgment in the Sydenham Licensing Committee ca.se to-day. After disposing of the technicalities in regard to the legality of the Returning Officer, he said that, as there would no doubt he an appeal, he would make an order restraining the defendants from refusing licenses of the premises of the plaintiffs on the ground only that the licensing of such premises is not required by the majority of the ratepayers and adult male and female residents in the Sydenham licensing district. He wished it to be distintly understood that he did not desire in any way to interfere with the discretion of the Committee, except so far as they claimed to exercise their discretion on prohibition lines. No costs were given. Leave to appeal was granted.
