(by telegraph.) (pes press association. ) WELLINGTON. January 5. A chemist at Palmers con North, named "Williams, was found dead in bed yesterday. As he was known to be in the habit of taking morphia, it is supposed this had something to do with it. The revenue returns for the nine months ending December 31st are satisfactory, but the export amounts will not be known until all the accounts are in. Except at the end of the financial year it is not usual to telegraph them to Wellington, and only money actually received by the 31st is taken into account. It has, however, been ascertained that the strike has not had the deleterious effect that was expected. The only game commenced this morning was that between Hookham and OUivier. The former had the move, and played " Zukertort's" opening. The game was very even at the 11th move, which Hookham sealed. This contest is also creating considerable interest, for, if OUivier is defeated, Hookham will have a leg in for first or second place. DUNEDIN. January 5. Occident and Tempest have been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington meeting. By re-valuation of selections in Otago for the year, under the Selectors Revaluation Act, the capital value of 434 holdings Crown lands is reduced from L 165,134 to L 96,085. All the berths are taken for the Tarawera's first Sounds excursion. CHRISTCHUK.CH. January 5. A lire broke out this morning in a seven-roomed dwelling and shop occupied by Bryenton, butcher, Linwood. The building was totally destroyed. Insurances—L2oo on the furniture and plant in the Commercial Union office, and LSOO on the House in the New Zealand office. "Very little furniture was saved. The origin of the fire is unknown. AUCKLAND. January 5. Arrived, at 7 a.m., Alameda, from San Francisco. She had a fair weather passage ; but was delayed by losing one of her propeller blades. On December 14th she called off Apia, to land von Chamberlain Decedercruntz, the new Chief Justice of Samoa, from Sweden, with his aide-de-camp, Lieut. Telfsparre. INVERCARGILL. January 5. Henry Manders, formerly a representa-. tive of Lake Wakatipu in Parliament, died suddenly this morning.
