(by telegraph.) (pes press association. ) WELLINGTON. January 5. A chemist at Palmers con North, named "Williams, was found dead in bed yesterday. As he was known to be in the habit of taking morphia, it is supposed this had something to do with it. The revenue returns for the nine months ending December 31st are satisfactory, but the export amounts will not be known until all the accounts are in. Except at the end of the financial year it is not usual to telegraph them to Wellington, and only money actually received by the 31st is taken into account. It has, however, been ascertained that the strike has not had the deleterious effect that was expected. The only game commenced this morning was that between Hookham and OUivier. The former had the move, and played " Zukertort's" opening. The game was very even at the 11th move, which Hookham sealed. This contest is also creating considerable interest, for, if OUivier is defeated, Hookham will have a leg in for first or second place. DUNEDIN. January 5.
