The Pall Mall Gazette has the following: —One of the richest women id Australia arrived in London last week. She is a young widow with a fortune; it ia said; of L25,000/a year, and her story illustrated what "a.gold mine" is the Broken Hill Silver Mine in New South Wales. The lady's husband paid Ll2O for oertain shares in this mine. When he died a short time ago the shares were ; oomparaT tively valueless, and he thought he was leaving his wife and young family in destitution. Shortly ,after his death the shares rose suddenlyto a price so marvellous that the widow sold a half of her shares for LIO,OOO, and'is now receiving L 25.000 a year. Professor Haokel, who has made many experiments with kola, atates thatj contrary to the assertion of Dr Germain See, caffeine is not the only active prlnoiple of kola. It also contains a red substance, to which he gives the name of \'kblaine." This substance prevents rapid „waste of tissue during fatiguing exerolse, whilst the caffeine with which it is combined stimulates the muscles. The kola nut was experimented with during the autumn maDceuvres of last year with snob, sucoesa as to lead the German WarOffioe to order no less than 30 tons of: nut for. consumption in the German army.
