A number of letters were received from certain consumers of water outside the j town re the proposed increase of charges :to be brought into force on January Ist, 1891. Court, be allowed him. .It.was decided, on the motion of Councillor Hedley, seconded by Councillor Emslie, that in any case where a summons is Issued Mr Woodcock be allowed half the registration; fee.;- .;. A letter was reoeived from the Colonial •Secretary's office to the effect that it was the duty of the Corporation to provide a morgue. This memo, was in anawer to a letter from the Counoil asking the Government to provide a morgue. Mr Jae. Lambert asked to be allowed to run a drain through thejfootpath in|Hum-ber-street. Permission waa granted. ■ Mr A. Barr brought under the notice of the Council the state of the footpath in Arun-street. The Counail decided to have the matter "attended to. ;, A complaint of a similar nature was laid before the Council by A. J. Grace, [and was referred to the Works Com'mlttee. Meaara J. and' T. Meek wrote atating in reply to th» Council's memo, notifying the acceptance of ; their tender for the supply of 500 tons of coal for the gas works, that they wished it to be understood that the tender of; 283 per ton was subject to strikes and accidents. A reply had sent to the writers to the. effeot that the Council had accepted their tender on the usual conditions.

Messrs J. and T. Meek wrote in reply that the mab'er would be referred to the manager of the Grey Valley Coal Company; :.: .'.' ■ .- The letter was received. A number of petitions . for repairs to; footpaths were received, and ordered to be attended to by the daymen. It was also decided that requests for shingling certain streets be referred to the Works Committee and the Engineer to report. ..The matter of a supply of lime for the gas works was referred to the Gas Committee. Mr H. Snow, engineer to the borough, who is about leaving the Council's ser-: vicas, wrote asking the. Council to vote him a bonus for his long services. After the matter had been discussed, Councillor Jones moved that the Counoil could not entertain the request. Seconded.by Councillor Hedley. Councillor Sumpter moved, and Councillor Brown seconded, that the matter be | referred back to. the Flnanoe Committee, as to the Council's power to vote a bonus. '' The motion was carried. Tenders for the formation of footpaths, carting, etc., were.: opened and that of Thomas Stuart accepted at L 9 17a 81. ■ Accounts amounting to L 142 153 4d were passed,for payment. ' The Reserve Committee's report was adopted. Councillor Sumpter proposed and Councillor Brown seconded that a copy of the letter received from the Government with reference to a morgue be forwatded to the Dunedln City Council, asking that body to. co-opera'e in getting the law amended so that the erection and control of morgues be In the hands of the Government. The motion was carried. It was thought that, were a clause inserted in ;the Coroners Inquest Bill the case would be met.
