Daily Circulation, 1500. The Oamaru Mail THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1890.

In order to find room for a highly interesting account of the great flood at Jionrke, in Australia, we hold over until to-morrow oar monthly garden calendar and other matter. An additional column of reading matter is given on the fint page of this issne, where will be found the annual report of the North Otago iigiloaltaral and Pastoral Association and other reports of interest. The Oamarn portion of the San Fr»nolsco mail arrives this evening. There will be a counter delivery at the Post Office between 7 rad 8 p.m. A great deal of unnecessary fust is being raised over the question as to whether Sir Robert Stout consulted Mr His'op before or after consenting to address the meeting at Oamara. Mr Hialop implied that Sir Bobert first consented and then asked his permission. It appears to us that had Mr fiislop been defending a friend Instead of opposing an enemy he would have dwelt on the meanness of imputing to the accused any breach of good faith, and he would doubtless have made out a strong oaße. There will occur to most dispassionate persons at least two possibilities in connection with this matter—which are, that Sir Bobert consulted Mr fiislop on the earliest possible opportunity, and intended, in ease of Mr Hislop's disapproval, to withdraw a promise which be believed had not gone so far as to ba irrevocable ; or he felt that Mr Hislop's magnanimity and courage were such that he would oertainly recognise the right of either Sir Bobert or any other peraon to sptak at Oamaru, or anywhere else, on politics, and not care what anybody might say in reference to himself or his colleagues. Sir Robert's asking for permission to speak was, in point of fact, nothing more than a matter cf form, observed out of mere courtesy, whioh we think could have been well dispensed with, We regret to say that even Mr Hislop, who seemed to expect bo much ezactidude in others, himself fell into error. He stated that Sir Robert did not ask his permission to speak till 1 p.m. on Saturday, 36 houro after the advertisement announcing the meeting had appeared in the North Otago Times. This could not be, as the advertisement did not appear' in the North Otago Times till Saturday morning. It, however, was inserted in the Mail on Friday, but in the town edition only, as it was reaelv»d too late for the country edition, Now, even if we admit that Mr fiislop did not also make a mistake in alleging that Sir Robert did not ask his permission on Saturday, is it not possible that, like Mr fiislop, Sir Bobert was guilty of an unoonsolous error. One has only to consider his own frailty to discover how liable humanity is to err, and to find some excuse for the fallibility of others.
