WAITAKI HIGH SCHOOL.

A meeting of the Board of Governors of the Waitaki High School was held yesterday when there were present: Messrs W. Christie (Chairman), Borrie, and Miller.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and outward correspondence approved. A letter was received from the Clerk to the Waitaki County Council respecting proposed embankment to prevent the encroachment of the Kakanui River 'at Maheno ; also asking the Board to make a grant of a year's rent for seotion 1 of 46, block 7, which amounted to L 24. The Board, after consideration, resolved to grant the request, providing the work was carried out under the supervision of the Engineer, and also that the work would protect part of section 20 of 16, same block, which also a reserve. Tendors were received and accepted for the sections at Palmerston as follows : Section 9, block 28, valuation LBOO, rental IA per annum, Bank of New Z land ; section 9, block 26, valuation L 275, rental L 4 per annum, Sarah E.nma Johnston.

The Secretary was instructed to inform the Board's teoants that they would be required to insure buildings on the Board's reserves in the Board's name, in accordance with their deeds. A letter was received from Mr M. J. Kaubley, Timarn, informing the Board that the majority of the creditors of Colonel Bailey had agreed to accspt his offer of 2i 6d In the £, and aaklog if the Board would agree to accept the same. The Secretary said that the amount of the debt waß about L 7 Ts. It was resolved, as the Board could do no better, to accept the offer. Several applications for remission of piart of fees for boys who had not attended school the full term were received and granted, and it was resolved to frame a regulation for dealing with suah caaes in future.

Mrs Burn, matron of the Girls' High School, wrote pointing out that she required farther assistance and recommending the Board to secure the services of a normal school graduate. The Secretary was instructed to make inquiries as to cost. Mrs Burn's letter also contained a request for a grant for purchasing prizes. It waa resolved to make a grant of Li, which Mr Borrie promised to supplement by one guinea. The applications for post of second master, for which the number of applicants was 20, were read, and before accepting one the Board resolved to fix the salary of the second master at L 220, and raised Mr Boll's salary to Ll5O. Five of the names were seleoted, . and of these the Board resolved to appoint Mr D. W. M. Burn, M.A. Accounts to the amount of L29417a 2d weie passed for payment. The Board then rose.
