" Commandant" Herbert Booth, the third son of General Booth, is a passenger to New Zealand by Shaw-Savlll's liner, the Dorie, whioh left England on August 11th, and is due in New Zaaiand on September 23. A curious and novel method of saving life in certain cases of poisoning has been originated by Dr Carlo Sanquirioo, of Sienna. By largely increasing the volume of the blood, which can be done by injeotlog into the arteries s*lloe solutions to the amount of about 8 per cent, of the weight of the animal, the poisons are actually rinsed out and eliminated from the system. In this way the lives of dogs and guineapigs were saved after being dosed with deadly amounts of strychnine, chloral, alcohol, aconitine, caffeine, and urethao. With certain other poisons, as morphine, curarine and nicotine, the method failed. Ir is not at all impossible that this discovery may introduce an improved treatment, not only for cases of poisoniug but for certain diseases. We are informed by tbe Collector of Customs that the Government have decided, owing to the representations of merchants against the imposition of duty on " internal packages " containing boiled sugars and other confectionary, that duty by weight shall be collected only on cardboard, paper, and other fancy packages—that being what was contemplated when framing this provision in the tariff.— Dunedin Herald.
