Some time since we published a sma'l paragraph on the unsatisfactory nature of much of tho jam retailed in the colony. This reached Me-srs Kirkpatrick and Co., of Nelsnn, and they went to work in a very practical fashion to prove that the j>ms manufactured by the firm were of the best quality, iwo cases of assorted jims were sent to this office, with a request: that we would thorongb ; y test the jam along with other brands, and give our opinion. We are hapgy to state, frankly and fully that we hare betn been much surprised, as prior to the receipt of Messrs Klrkpatriok's gift we were nnawnre that New Zealand could boast of an industry of which it has so muoa leatoa to be proud. Tho vaHous sorts of jam were tested by a number ot person, who compared the simples with other brands, and the general verdict is that not only are Messrs Rirkpatrick'g prodnotions far aud away better than any other New Zealand brand we can obtain, bnt they are superior to in ' eing fro-her The nearest appioacn to the excellence of the Nelson jim was that contained in t : ns bearing the name of a Tasmanian firm, bnt oven in this compirison the Nel-on article cime out a long way the best. Samples of Kirkpatrick and Co.'a "K" brand of jam hava been forwa-ded to us, and wo are free to confess that they appear to be in every way excellent, and as they become better known in the looal market will meet with much appreciation from the heads of households. The miker assorts that none but the purest fruits grown in Nelson are used in his manufactures, aud wo are content to accept the assurance.
