BOOTMAKERS' STRIKE IN AUCKLAND.
(by telegraph.) Auckland, August 28. The members of the Operative Bootmakers' Union who are engaged at Garrett Bros.' factory, and who at first ignored the mandate of the Union that they should go out on strike, have now changed thtjir minds. Those who were employed on piece work struck to-day, whilst the men engaged on weekly wages have given one week's notice of their intention to leave. It 1b stated that the reason why the men did not strike when ordered to do so by the Union was that they had some work to finish. The cause of the difficulty is stated to be the employment of boys and Improvers, • Correspondence has recently passed between the Masters' Association, the Bootmakers' Union, and Garrett Bros, on the sabjeot, but the latter refused to oomply with a demand that they should discharge the improvers and regulate the employment of boys, and this is the reason for tho extreme steps taken by the Union oalling out the men. The Masters' Association are bound to a certain scale of pay, and to regulations concerning the employment of boys and improvers, but Garrett Bros, do not belong to this Association, and therefore do not conform to the agreemont, though they claim that theypay tho full Union rates, and do not employ a disproportionate number of boys.
