The Government (says the YFanganui Herald) hass received a communication from the Indian Government respecting the supply of horses satiable fur military purposes, and Mr Monro, sheep inspector, has received, along with others, instructions to make inquiries on the subject. The kinds of horses in demand are, first of all, large horses for heavy artillery, commissariat, etc; next, the cavalry horse, which is a ihado lighter still. There is farther, a demand in India for carriage horses, ladies' hacks, and hunters. It has been intimated, we x understand, that the Indian Government could take from New Zealand alone 2000 homes a year for ten years, which, at L2O a horse, would mean a nice little sum of 140,000 a year coming into the colony, of which the West Coast portion ought to be considerable. By far the largest shipment cf cheese that hsa yet left this district was taken north by the s.s. Invercargill to-day. She baa 114 tons on board, and tranships it at Lyttelton into the Rimutaka, for London. The following are the shipper* :—Edendale factory, 25 tons ; Matanra factory, 13 tons ; Gore factory, 10 tons ; Woodlands factory, 10 tons; Aparima factory, 7 tons ; Fairfax factory, 7 tons ; Waianiwa factory, 7 tons; Mr Saxolby, Roslyn Bosh, 6 tons; Wyatt Brothers, Otama Bridge, 3 ton?. The cheese is valued at about L 4500 locally.—lnvercargill News.
