HOME AND FOREIGN. (retjter's telegrams). Received December 30, at 7-50 p.m. London, December 29.
The mails, ex Ballarat, from Melbourne {November- 19th) were delivered to-day by way of Brindisi. ' The Right Hon. Mr Forster is very ill, and hiß medical attendant states he is in a critical condition. He is suffering from an affection of the brain. The Aorwigi has arrived at Plymouth with frozen meat, which is in good condition. Paris; December 29. M. Brisson, the French Premier, persists in tendering his resignation, giving as his reason the persistent hostility evinced by the Chamber of Deputies to the Ministry. The President of the Republic, however, refuses to accept M. Brissou's resignation. Received December SO, at 10.30 p.m.
London, December 29. Consols and New Zealand securities are unaltered.
The market rate of discount has been reduced to 3, and is now 1 per cent, below the bank rate.
Pig iron, f.o.b. in Clyde, Is per ton lower, to-day's quotations being 435; galvanised iron, packed f.o.b. in London, remains at LI 4 15s.
The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's Doric, from London, left here last night for New Zealand. Received December 31, at 0.45 am. Pabis, December 30. The President of the Republic has accepted thfr resignation of M. Brisßon, and summoned M. de Freycinet to form a Cabinet. M.. de Freycinet has not definitely acceded to M. Grevy's request, and hesitates to undertake the task. ' Received December 31, at 1 1.30 a. m. London, December 30. Advices from the Afghan Boundary Commission state that the difficulty has been overcome, the boundary line having been fixed at Maruchuk. The members of the Commission have now completed their preparations, and are going Into winter quarters.

New South Wales, has concluded to-day in the presence of a large number of spectators. The match resulted in the defeat of New South Wales by an innings and 79 runs. Received December 31, at 0.45 a.m. Melbourne, December 30. A large fire broke out to-day in the kerosene stores occupied by Messrs Jones and Co., situated in the Sandridge road. Owing to the inflammable nature of the contents of the building, the efforts of the firemen were unavailable, and the fire is ■still raging fiercely.
