THE BUSH FIRES NEAR NAPIER.
(by telegraph.) Napier, December 30. The bush fires are still spreading. There was no wind to-night, and the fires have somewhat abated. The Napier firemen who went to Makatoka with an engine succeeded in making the township Bafe, and returned to town this morning. Before they arrived, however, telegrams were sent to recall them, the wind having risen and carried the fire towards Norsewood, a considerable township. They went back with more appliances and a second engine. Latest advices state that four houses and a large sawmill owned by Mr Silberman, at Norsewood, have been destroyed, and the fires were spreading. Ormondville is now threatened. Funds are being raised in Napier for th' 9 homeless settlers, numbers of whom have lost everything they possessed in the world. Few of the smaller settlers were insured, and it iB impossible in the general confusion to ascertain accurately the insurances in some of the'larger fireß.
