The Teaaeraki School picnic was hold co Thursday last in Mr Kalnforth's plant*lho, kindly tent for the occasion, which for convenience and picturesqoenes* cannot bo surpassed in tho district. In all there were onwards of 100 praaa to bo competed for, and the events consisted of running, jumping, skipping, hopping, singing, and spelling. Tea, cake, Ac., were served out in great pkntifnlncsa twice during the day. After all the events bad been comptetsd. tho children gave three cheers to Mr Bainfertb for the use of bis grounds, and then marched to the school, when* the prixss were handed to the successful competitor*. Miss Will kindly distributed the prisss. These were for tho most part competed for in athletic games, and not for school work. I may mention that two splendid prizse were given by Mr and Mrs Raid, of Eldenlie, for composition by tmys and the beat sewing by girls, and these were won by John Paterson and Jessie Rosa respectively. Mrs Henderson, Mrs Paterson, and others gave special | prisus, which were duly awarded. | The following nineteen children gained : certificates of merit for having passed in jail the subjects at the Inspector's late I staodard examination : Frank Kelk, | Julia Common, John Walker, B. Pater- ! ion, Preston Battersby, Eilcn Falconer, I Minnie Grace, Sarah Lewis, Alexander | Carson, Wallace Meek, James Taylor, | William Bums, James Henderson, Jane i Common, Annie Moreton, Martha Mar- ' tin, Charlotte Burns, Elizabeth Cotmick, I and Mary Golding. The Rev. Mr Will, in handing over theso cards of merit, said that be regarded them as being better than the prirea they had run for that day, as they contd k?ep tho cards as ! mementoes of a good hard year's work. Cheers were also given to Mr Will, Miss Will, the School Committee, and to those who had ! provided the edibles, &c., &c. And thus i was brought to a dose ono of the most enjoyable days ever spent in our quiet f little district. Everything seemed to run 'smoothly and quietly, and the interest ' was steadily sustained throughout the entire day.
